Setup a Free Cloud CCTV System for the Home

CCTV or closed-circuit television has been around for years. Its history dates back to the 1940s believe it or not, but it really took off in the 70s. Traditionally its involved dedicated analog video systems and wiring, and it’s been used mostly by security professionals. With the advent of mobile and cloud technologies, combined with awesome IP-based cameras becoming more affordable, things are changing. Homeowners can now access a cloud CCTV system for very low cost, including yes, free. We’ll show you how to setup one in minutes… read on.

To get started you need a webcam, PC/Mac, and internet connection. Told you this was going to be easy.

First choice is to install software such as VitaminD or to use a cloud CCTV service like Camcloud. You’ll get more bells and whistles with a VitaminD type package but it’s harder to setup. For this quick tutorial, we’ll walk you through the use of Camcloud.

UPDATE: We also recommend reviewing this Home Security 101 Backgrounder that explains some more detailed “Dos and Don’ts” for Home Security.

Here are the Setup Steps:

1. Sign-up for a free account at www.camcloud.com. It just takes a minute. Once you login, it will take you to the Timeline page. From here, select “Add Camera” to launch the setup wizard.

2. Select your camera, configure a few settings and select “Finish”. The camera will no be configured for use on the Camcloud platform.

3. Start Monitoring! You’ll see the camera on you web and mobile Timeline and all the important events will be saved in the cloud!

Now you have a free cloud CCTV system installed in your home! Really, you do. From a mobile device (iPhone or Android) or another PC/Mac, go to the Live View page in your Camcloud account. Start the camera and you’ll see live video. It also has motion detection built-in, amongst other features.

Try out the free plan, and if you want to use an IP camera, check out our list of supported IP cameras. Not only do they work with Camcloud, they operate over WiFi so you don’t need to have them connected to your computer.
